On Tuesday, April 30th, students from Mrs. Caldeira’s and Mrs. Baraki’s literature classes took a field trip to the Monterey County Superior courtroom of Judge Larry Hayes to participate in a mock trial lesson based on their reading of The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Students from Mrs. Caldeira’s class played the roles of counsel for the prosecution and defense. They used evidence from the novels to construct their arguments.
Mrs. Baraki’s class sat as jurors on the case of The People of Panem v. Coriolanus Snow and delivered the following verdicts: President Snow was acquitted of the charges of Crimes of Aggression and Crimes Against Humanity. He was found guilty of War Crimes and Genocide (based on the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court).
We are very grateful to the Monterey County Judges in the Classroom program and the Honorable Larry Hayes for their support of our students. We had so much fun!
